Multi-team event fundraising: Everything to know before launching your next event

on June 25, 2018

We’re adding fundraising improvements (and a little love) to CrowdRise by GoFundMe with every single update we make, and our enhanced multi-team functionality is no exception. If you’re hosting a large-scale event, like a run, a cycling race, or a hike, the ability to easily add, customize, and allow multi-team functionality is huge. So let’s walk through all things multi-team and why this functionality is such a great feature for nonprofits.

What is multi-team fundraising?

Multi-team fundraising is a powerful fundraising feature that enables individual fundraisers to group up in multiple teams, all under the umbrella of a larger fundraising campaign. Individual fundraisers can then join one of these fundraising teams as team members, making it a campaign that is three levels deep.

The most well known example of multi-team fundraising is an event, like a race or a dinner. For example, let’s say an animal shelter is organizing a Lady and the Tramp-style spaghetti dinner to raise money for their cause. The campaign organizer creates the campaign (the dinner), teams join (team dogs vs. team cats), and individual fundraisers (attendees) join the teams.blg_MultiTeamFundraising_2018_1_Teams_v2_In-blog GraphicsSo how is this multi-team fundraiser different from your typical campaign with multiple fundraisers? Essentially, multi-team fundraising allows individuals to support your nonprofit on another level outside of their personal draw to your cause. For example, maybe they want to support you as part of a club, an alumni group, or by pledging allegiance to team dogs vs. team cats. Multi-team allows fundraisers to show support both as a group and as an individual.

Teams also add a healthy level of competition to the event, as teams race to out-fundraise one another — driving more support and, in turn, even more donations. All of the money raised by the individual fundraisers adds up to show the total amount raised by their team, and then the combined total raised by all the teams rolls up to the campaign total.

Why would I use multi-team fundraising?

Multi-team fundraising is a great way to create a sense of competition and community during a large-scale event. When you allow for multi-team fundraising, you’re able to encourage teams of all types to come together and benefit your organized campaign. And with the added features of a top-teams tab and top-individuals tab, you’re able to bolster some friendly competition among individuals and teams.  blg_MultiTeamFundraising_2018_2_Leaderboard_v2_In-blog GraphicsAdditionally, you’re able to communicate with these teams in ways that are personal and motivating. For example, some multi-team events choose to have team captains, making it easy as the organizer to reach out throughout the event to provide encouragement and share updates. You can have these team captains send sample messaging to their team members in order to jump start their fundraising, send reminders about goals or upcoming dates, and even encourage their fundraisers to climb the leaderboard ladder.05When you are a part of a team, you develop a ‘team identity’ that’s great for fostering community, and actually makes you less intimated and more likely to join the event again the following year.

Why should I use CrowdRise by GoFundMe for all my multi-team fundraising?

While we’ve always had the functionality to support a multi-team event, our newly redesigned and rebuilt platform makes it easier than ever to create a custom multi-team event that fits your exact campaign, along with incorporating registration and ticketing capabilities. A refreshed look and feel also means that you’ll get the very best and modern home for your premiere events.

Here are just a few reasons why CrowdRise’s multi-team functionality is the best out there for your fundraising campaign:

Ease-of-use

Within our campaign manager, you can start to organize your fundraisers into groups of teams for your large event or competition in a matter of minutes. From there you can customize your branding, add content, and share your campaign with supporters.blg_MultiTeamFundraising_2018_6_TeamEditTool_In-blog GraphicsFlexibility

Large-scale events have too many details and intricacies to look at them as a one-size-fits-all model. So flexibility when it comes to multi-team fundraising is huge. The ability to enable offline donations, see live previews as you go, add ticketing and registration, and create custom campaign messaging are just some of the perks to the new functionality on the platform.

Branding that stays close

We know how important consistent branding and branding control capabilities are to your events. That’s why when you create a multi-team fundraising event, you’ll be able to create branded team page templates, with a pre-set goal, story, and image that clearly represents your cause. You’ll also be able to determine what your teams can control on their page, making sure that their personal story shines through, but your event’s branding stays consistent across the board.blg_MultiTeamFundraising_2018_7_ProfileTeamBrand_v2_In-blog GraphicsMobile responsive

The new CrowdRise by GoFundme is entirely mobile responsive, meaning that everything not only looks incredible on any type of device, but you can actually view, manage, and edit easily and seamlessly on any type of device. Now you can easily set up a campaign on the go, update your team members on the fly, and your supporters can join the team, share their campaign, and thank donors right from their phones.

Team overviews

By using our newly redesigned Campaign Manager, you can see a list of all the teams in your campaign. This is also the place where you’ll be able to see total raised, team name, team organizer, amount of donations the team has received, and date created. You’ll also be able to add offline donations to the team, message the team organizer, message the entire team, list of all the fundraisers on the team, mark a team as official, and hide a team from the campaign and leaderboard. Phew… that’s a lot of things.
